The Magic of Wood Floors
an article from Ocala Magazine, April 2002

Ocala's master craftsmen create and restore artistic wonders at Custom Hardwood Flooring

Add beauty and warmth with a floor such as this red oak.
Picture, if you would, an intricate medallion of three horseheads created in inlays of 70 ? that's right, seven-zero-species of wood. Or, for that matter, imagine a spectacular wood floor layed in a herringbone pattern; another in basket-weave.

Grand ceremonial halls at Versailles, right?

Nope. Right here in Ocala!

It's the work of partners and passionate master craftsmen Rob Bunnell and Brad Smith, owners of Custom Hardwood Flooring of Ocala, LLC. And these amazing, one-of-a-kind floors are in progress in half a dozen places in and around Marion County, as we speak! Indeed, some 7,000 square feet of their wood floors are about to be unveiled at the clubhouse and sales center of Golden Ocala!

What began as, and remains, a hobby with a passion is a vibrant and thriving business for Bunnell and Smith, who together have been creating perfection in wood flooring for over 40 years and are proud members of the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA).

"It's amazing what they do," says Sue Bunnell with obvious pride. "And Ocala, today, is floor medallion the place for it ? from 100 year old wood floors in the Historic District being restored to large horse farms and private estates in places such as South Point, Westbury, and the Country Club of Ocala, along with many others."

"However, they do it all, not just homes of the famous and the merely wealthy," she adds. "As long as it involves wood floors, they're there!"

Several years ago the Bunnells and Smiths chose to move to Ocala, for its pristine setting, space and quality of life in which to raise their families. The bonus has been a clientele that appreciates the truly custom, one-of-a-kind talent and craftsmanship Rob and Brad offer.

In fact, Sue says, "I don't think there is a question or situation in their business these two have not encountered, and they always find a solution. Getting to be this good takes years of experience and a true love of their craft."

Along with kindred wood-craftsmen Brad and Jackie Smith, the Bunnells have established one of Florida's most impressive wood flooring companies. Jackie and Sue own and operate Old Country Wood Floors & Rental Center Inc., a spin-off business that offers homeowners and individuals who want the natural texture of pre-finished and laminate flooring, and rent equipment for do-it-yourself projects.

Their knowledge of wood benefits all who inquire, whether by phone or by visit to their showroom. From choosing a specific species of wood, to color choices, or creating a particular design style, the experts are available to assist you.

Wood flooring today is available in a wide variety of woods, from the most popular domestic species of Oak, Maple, Pine, Hickory, and Ash, to an array of Exotic woods from such places as South America, Asia, and Africa. Brazilian Cherry, Ip?Cumaru, Sapele, Iroko, Padouk, Purpleheart, and Rosewood are just to name a few. Many of the exotic woods are used in our medallions because of their distinctive grain and wide range in color from deep browns and reds to vibrant yellows and purples.

Inlays involve artistic minds, patience, and feel for what a customer is looking for. Most inlays are made by hand with hours of designing, measuring, and cutting put into the creation of a medallion.

A lot of what makes Custom Hardwood Flooring stand above the rest is the well maintained equipment used on every job. Top of the line stains and urethanes are also a big part of the secret that yields these works of art.

Add value to the equation and you have one smart investment.
Real estate figures show that a home or building with beautiful hardwood floors, doesn't just sell faster, it commands a higher price.

Cork is a unique, natural, arrestingly beautiful material that retains its natural buoyancy, making it comfortable to walk on and thus exceptionally easy on the legs and feet.
An exciting new product Custom Hardwood Flooring is marketing is cork. Brad has done many commercial and residential projects with this hot new look. "Yes," says Brad, "cork is wood, and is made from the bark of trees that grow mainly in Spain and Portugal. They live to be over 800 years old replenishing the bark every 9-14 years. Custom Hardwood Flooring is very consciences of the environment and always try to obtain their materials from FSC certified forests."

Lest you get the impression that everything Custom Hardwood Flooring does is high-end, the owners emphasize that they work on commercial projects, restoration and more modest projects as well. They can tell you what's possible, with a free estimate for just about any project you have in mind.

As long as it's wood, the Bunnells and the Smiths are in their element. Wood is their passion, "and doing what you enjoy no longer becomes a job," says Sue Bunnell. For them, wood is love. And it shows!
